Onesies: Not Just for Children Anymore…

Now that spring is officially here, I hope you’re all prepared for the warmer weather we’ve been having! If you’re looking for a fabulous piece to transition into the coming months, look no further than a jumpsuit/romper/onesie – call it what you will. I know, I know you may be thinking, “aren’t those for children?” but trust me, they can look incredibly sophisticated if worn correctly! Jumpsuits are perfect pieces in that the can be thrown on and styled with ease like a dress, but at the same time can have the versatility of separates. I think jumpsuits sometimes get a bad rap because so often they are worn incorrectly (i.e. head-to-toe velour anything resembling “clubwear”), but here are a few examples of styles done right:

Generally speaking, dark or neutral colored jumpsuits are going to be the most flattering and serve as an ideal blank canvas for bold accessories. This Theory Shiri Laureate Wool-Blend Jumpsuit is actually elegant enough to be worn in an office setting when paired with a structured blazer and pumps, but transitions perfectly to evening with bold jewelry and a fierce shoe.

In terms of printed one-piece styles, I prefer a romper as opposed to full-length style (wearing a print from head to toe can be fairly overwhelming). Even with the sequin embellishment, this DKNY Sequined Silk-Blend Playsuit can be worn during the daytime – just be sure to pair similar styles with neutral accessories like those pictured here. In cooler months, this option would also look amazing worn with tights and ankle boots!

One of my favorite ways to wear a romper is as a casual cover-up. This Diane Von Furstenberg Rompie Jersey Playsuit travels really well, is easy to throw on over a swimsuit, and looks chic even when you’re not on the beach.

So ladies, dare to wear a one-piece style this year, but keep in mind these tips while shopping and as always, stay fashionable!

Nude is the New Black

Neutral shades from alabaster to tan are definitely something to get excited about for spring, but the look can be a bit difficult to pull off without looking, well, nude – so take notes on these tips to make the look work for you!

• Look for neutrals that complement your skin tone, but don’t completely blend in.
• Texture, draping, and embellishment are your friends – they give substance to neutrals making them multi-dimensional.
• Pair your neutrals with pops of color – bright baubles, red lipstick or a boldly-hued bag are sure to stand out.

Alice + Olivia’s Jesse Jersey Dress is a great allover nude piece because it combines a sequined embellished top with the draping of the skirt while still elongating the body. The William Rast Ruffle Leather Jacket is a perfect transition piece over the next few months – pair it with a button down and skinny jeans now and floral frocks later. The ruffled shoulder and waist-tie detail add just the right dimension to Milly’s One-Shoulder Ruffle Dress which would look fabulous with a bright turquoise shoe!

The best thing about neutral separates – they’re super easy to coordinate! Pictured are the Free People Ruffled Miniskirt, Maggie Ward Drapey Tank, and Robert Rodriquez Draped Shorts.

Nude shoes are the best leg-lengthening secret. I cannot stress how essential these are to your spring wardrobe! Peep-toes or strappy sandals are the best for not completely cutting off your feet, but even a plain pump or neutral flat will elongate you. The Ruthie Davis Sushi Roll Double Platform Pumps, Modern Vintage Georgie High Heel Booties, and Antik Batik Kiwi Cotton Ballet Flats with Beads are all excellent options.

Stay fashionable,

Accessorizing with statement cuffs

The easiest way to turn an outfit from blah to hurrah! is with the right accessories. Most of you have already seen statement necklaces have their day, and while they are here to stay for spring, the statement cuff is having a spotlight moment this season. Keeping in mind that not all cuffs are created equal, here are a few examples of pretty pieces to spice up any outfit!

For those of you who may have more modest taste in jewelry, a basic metal cuff with subtle detailing like the Zoppini Zo-Dark Corset Lacing Cuff Bracelet can still make a statement. Lucite also made an appearance in several of the Spring 2010 runways shows, and the Patricia von Musulin Lucite Cuff is a perfect example of how such a simple piece can be eye-catching.

Cut-out metal cuffs are versatile bracelets that come in a variety of patterns and price points. For a fun look, roll up your sleeves and try layering these with a few bangles. The Kris Nations Gold Heart Cluster Cuff is an adorable bracelet (that could even make a lovely Valentine’s Day gift) and the Kendra Scott Jewelry Bezel Lilac Agate Cuff would look great layered with your everyday watch.

If you wear a lot of neutral colors, brightly hued cuffs might be just what you need to take an outfit to the next level. The possibilities are endless, but I love the colored stones in the Ben Amun Gold Coral Colored Stone Cuff or the Stella & Dot Colorburst Enamel Cuff in Green/Turquoise.

Finally, if bling is more your thing, statement cuffs dripping in crystals should definitely be a part of your accessory arsenal. The Dannijo Anya Cuff and Valentino Gold-tone Brass Coral Cuff are both striking pieces that any bold fashionista will love.

Workplace to Weekend

In case you haven’t noticed, stores everywhere are having sales to make room for spring merchandise so it’s the perfect time to invest in key pieces to spice up your wardrobe! Far too often, women buy clothing “for work” or “for play” and end up with few truly versatile pieces. I may work in a typical corporate work environment, but looking professional doesn’t mean plain black suits and button downs. I strive to primarily purchase items that are appropriate for multiple occasions and here are few key pieces that will take you from the workplace to the weekend in style!

An ideal suit alternative contains pieces that look as good together as they do apart. The Nanette Lepore ‘Perfect Girl’ Jacket and Halo Tweed Skirt are perfect examples of chic suiting separates that won’t look “stuffy” when worn outside of the workplace. The Rebecca Taylor Tweedy Combo Dress is a cute option for cocktails or dinner, but also looks professional when paired with the Tweedy Jacket. Best of all, either of these jackets can be thrown on over jeans and a tee for a put-together, casual weekend look.

Joie ‘Joyce’ Lace Sleeve Voile Top

Lingerie inspired attire was all over the Spring/Summer 2010 runways and sophisticated tops with feminine details like lace and ruffles are a great way to incorporate this trend into stylish staples. Just make sure you choose items that don’t actually look like you are wearing underwear as outerwear. The Robbi & Nikki Ruffle Lace Halter and Joie ‘Joyce’ Lace Sleeve Voile Top are examples of pieces that work just as well with pencil skirts and pearls as they do with skinny jeans and leather jackets.

So ladies, just because a boring black suit is on sale or because non-iron button downs are “practical” doesn’t mean you need another. Keep these ideas in mind when adding to your wardrobe and as always, stay fashionable!

Shopping Resolutions for the New Year

It’s that time again when everyone is making resolutions for the New Year. Many women make resolutions to better their personal appearance and in turn the way that they feel about themselves – go to the gym more often, eat better, quit smoking, etc. – but it seems like fashion resolutions are overlooked. While you may not end up making it to the gym or cutting down on french fries, here are a few shopping resolutions that you can easily follow through on by incorporating them into your daily lives!

1) Shop your closet first:

If your closet is anything like mine, it’s definitely in need of better organization. This year, resolve to make the most of what you have before making a purchase. How precious is your closet real estate to you? Do you have pairs of shoes with worn out soles or jeans that haven’t fit since college? Well it’s time to take all of the pieces that don’t work and actually do something with them – get them repaired, get them altered or get them out of there! On that note, one of the most common mistakes women make when it comes to their wardrobes is not investing in a good tailor and it makes a huge difference in how your clothing fits and makes you feel. (And if you need suggestions for a good tailor in the Washington, DC area, let me know!)

2) Buy less, buy better:

How many times have you bought something just because it was on sale or because it looked great on a celebrity in a magazine… only to be disappointed later because it was a passing trend that wasn’t right for your wardrobe? This year I’m personally resolving to buy less, buy better. Instead of investing in cheaper, trendier items, join me in resolving to invest in more quality wardrobe staples that you know you will wear for years to come. While it may be easy to get distracted from this resolution when you see the perfect pair of purple suede ankle boots that you simply “must have,” keep yourself on track by making a list of all of the things you think are truly missing from your wardrobe and cross purchases off that list before adding to your closet in other ways.

3) Keep it real:

Resolve to dress the way that you want to be seen. If you don’t want to be seen as someone who is sloppy, don’t leave the house in sweatpants and Uggs. If you do want to be seen as someone who is confident, put on your highest heels or reddest lipstick or whatever it is that will make you feel good about yourself. I am the biggest advocate of overdressing – because there is nothing wrong with putting on something fabulous, walking into a room and having everyone say, “Wow! You look great.”

4) Get and give back:

In an attempt to cut down on clutter in their condo, my brother-in-law recently tried to institute the rule “for every new item you buy, give one away.” This may work for you, but there are other ways to give back while shopping for yourself and your family as well. If you do any shopping online, consider shopping through nonprofitshoppingmall.com. Founded by Corine Couwenberg, this is a simple way to aid nonprofits in their fundraising initiatives by doing your everyday shopping. A percentage of each purchase you make through nonprofitshoppingmall.com goes directly to the nonprofit organization of your choice at no extra cost to you. Another way you can shop and give back is by making purchases that support artisans around the world through sites like NOVICA or locally at Pangea.

5) Take a risk:

Finally, I challenge you to resolve to change up your wardrobe a little by taking a fashion risk. Whether it be as simple as incorporating more bright colors into your clothing choices or channeling Carrie Bradshaw and investing in a ballerina inspired getup, surprise yourself (and everyone else) by experimenting with something new. After all, fashion should be fun!

Here’s to better shopping and a more fashionable 2010!
